Quentin Jones – My New York

Quentin Jones is a London-based artist whose humorous, witty and coquettish mixed-media work spans collage, illustration and stop-motion film. Quentin’s personal style is as revered as her creative style and you may have seen her sporting PRISM on our Instagram account recently too! A well-travelled artist, Quentin shares us her favourite places in New York – and it includes a fair few galleries too.

3 places that define the spirit of New York: The dog playground in Tompkins Square Park, The Williamsburg Bridge, and Bemelman’s at the Carlyle.

How does your work shape your experience of New York? When I was living in NY, my studio was first in East Williamsburg (and not in a cool way) and then in Soho, which was a total dream. For the former I would cycle all the way from the West Village, which was the best way to see the city, and so fun whizzing down the Williamsburg Bridge at the end of a long day. Later my studio was in Soho & I lived in the East Village, so I had a 15 min walk down Bowery to my studio, which was a dream commute.

For someone visiting for a day, what’s your must-do? My favourite days in NY are ones spent (usually slightly hungover) wandering through downtown Manhattan, stopping for brunch with friends, multiple coffees and spending far too much shopping. It is such a great city to discover by yourself on foot.

For a moment’s peace in your city head to… The Greenwich Hotel’s Shibui Spa for a massage or facial. So heavenly.

For art inspiration head to… The New Museum on Bowery, they always have great exhibitions spread over multiple stories, and a great bookstore and little cafe. Also the newsagent next store is where I would go and peruse magazines for project research. Two birds/one stone.

What inspires you about New York? The heat coming off the sidewalks on a summer evening as you head out into the night. It can lead to the longest magical nights.

Quentin’s New York Packing List

  • Flat shoes for walking – and you need to be able to run after whatever fun comes your way! Quentin wears PRISM Bora Bora sandals in Raffia Leather
  • As New York’s almost always sunny, we recommend PRISM CALVI sunglasses in Black to Cream Gradient
  • Brightening eye drops to soothe your eyes that will have gone red from all the air-con or heating. Don’t pack this though – buy it there!

Best restaurant? Il Bucco – delicious food and the warmest welcome

Café? The Smile– It’s a cafe by day & bar by night

Where to shop? Reformation is always my first stop because you can’t get it in London. Creatures of Comfort and Edith the Machinist for vintage.

Where to party? I am told with good authority that Berlin is the fun spot right now. When I was living there it was Baby Grand.

Can you tell us your best travel adventure to date? Probably time spent in India, waking up on trains and seeing the coast winding away under the trains. But that was when I was up for roughing it a bit more!

Where you’re keen to head next? I am trying to plan my honeymoon and our top contender right now is Argentina. I am desperate to go to Buenos Aires, and then fly to Uruguay for some beach time.
