WHY WE DO NOT PARTICIPATE IN BLACK FRIDAY?
GoodEnergy 2022 reports: "Last year, UK deliveries from Black Friday sales were estimated to release over 429,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions, around 0.12% of the UK’s total annual emissions in one day.
Waste is a big issue, as large discounts and cheap products convince people to buy items they don’t need, just for the sake of it. Around 80% of items brought on Black Friday are thrown away after a few uses, some without being used at all.”
As a small and independent business with a considered attitude towards the garments we put out into the world and the effect it has on the future of our planet, this Black Friday we wanted to share 3 points to encourage resisting it.
1. BUY BETTER, BUY LESS
Our garments are designed with multi-purpose, functionality, quality and an attention to detail at the forefront of everything we do. We believe it’s better to invest in items that serve more than one purpose in a consumer’s wardrobe and are made to last. And therefore in the long run, are more cost effective to the consumer.
AKA less clutter and waste in your wardrobe!
2. THINK ETHICALLY
When we buy our clothes, we often neglect their origins and the people who made them. When garment's prices are slashed to a fraction of their original price, it instantly devalues the human labour behind them and creates more waste.
At PRISM, we work with family run factories in Italy that are Oeko Tex Standard 100; making sure of the human-ecological safety of our products and that everyone gets a fair price for their work.
3. MEND, SWAP, SELL, UPDATE, DONATE
Sometimes it’s easy to disregard our current clothing but as part of creating a larger circular economy where a garment’s life cycle gets more use, we are in turn reducing the impact of waste in landfill.
Think about simply mending, swapping, donating or updating pieces in your wardrobe.
